How to Design Your Dream Deck

Deck design isn't as complicated as you think!

Seriously, it's not rocket science. With the right tools this process can actually be really fun and happens to be one of my favorite parts of building a deck!

I like the design phase so much because this is where your creative energy and our expertise come together to build the ultimate outdoor living space for you and your family. If you don't feel ready for a design consultation, here are some things you can do on your own to prepare:

    • Set a realistic budget that you are willing to invest into your outdoor living space.
    • Research deck boards from reputable companies such as Timbertech or Azek.
    • Measure out the area you would like to have your deck cover.
    • Think about what will you be using your deck for most. Cookouts, entertainment, family time, etc.

Useful design services your deck builder should offer, (when you're ready).

  • 3D rendering software.
  • Multiple renderings showing how the space will come together.
  • obtaining zoning and building permits.
  • Samples of decking and railing products.

Obtaining Permits

The stories I could tell of projects that have gone south because this simple step was avoided are numerous. Please ensure your deck builder is taking the time to obtain all necessary permits in accordance with local building authorities. Why this is important:

  • Building departments will ensure construction is up to code.
  • Contractors that avoid this step often aren't qualified for the project.
  • Avoid delays in your project.

Setting a Realistic Budget

This step is often overlooked in the design phase because pricing can very significantly depending on size and materials.

However, being upfront with what you expect to invest in your outdoor living space is crucial for a satisfactory design. Here's why:

  • Your design expert can help make decisions on what materials to use and where to use them.
  • Budget will ultimately determine the life expectancy of your deck. Typically, longer product warranties come with bigger price tags.
  • A large "cheap" deck could end up being nothing but headaches while a smaller space utilizing high quality materials can be peace of mind for decades.

Conclusion

Designing your dream deck might seem daunting at first, but with the right information and tools it can be a highly enjoyable process. There are a few key details you need to get just right, and after that it's a breeze. Do your due diligence and stay away from sketchy contractors who don't obtain permits or try to skimp on the quality of materials. At the end of the day, building your outdoor living space is a very rewarding process and it all starts with a great design!
